Winner of Eco-friendly gift of the year 2007, the SunJar is a decorative, energy efficient, solar light made from a traditional mason jar, a highly efficient solar cell, a rechargeable battery and a low energy LED light bulb.

To activate, simply place the jar in direct sunlight during the day (either outside or on a window sill). The solar cell then creates an electrical current that charges the battery. This energy stored in the battery is then used at night to power an LED inside the jar whose  frosted glass diffuses the light creating the appearance of natural sunlight.

The jar also contains a light sensor which automatically activates the light when it gets dark and turns it off again when light returns.  An override switch hidden inside the lid lets you turn the light off and conserve the battery life.

What we like about this product is the sheer simplicity of its design. With frosted glass and no controls visible on the outside of the jar, during the day it just looks like any other jar. Yet when darkness sets in its magical glow is revealed, and we were really surprised about how much light was actually produced. Also since mason jars, by their very nature, are watertight, the Sun Jar is safe to use outside in all weather conditions - so not only does the SunJar make the perfect nightlight for a child's bedroom, it also makes a beautiful solar light for the garden (or camping) too!

Please read before you place your order:  SunJars need DIRECT sunshine to work (an electric light indoors is not bright enough). That means that in winter or cloudy weather you may find that your SunJar illuminates for less time than usual, or may not light up at all. For improved results, leave the SunJar in the off position whilst charging and only switch it to the on position when you would like it to glow. Alternatively, you can also recharge the batteries in a normal battery charger.
